Description
Sant Tukaram (1608-50)-Tukoba to Marathi scholars and Saint Tukaram to most of his translators-represents one of the foremost poets that brightened the Bhakti cult in 17th Century North-western India. He embellished Marathi literature (and reaches out to many more through his translations) with his pious and powerful poetry emerging from his unflinching faith. However, he also led an ordinary life with all its hardships, fending for one’s family. All these made his poetry philosophical yet deeply rooted in earthly virtues as well. Never an escapist, Tukaram’s considerable output in verses deal with intense philosophy as well as the most mundane daily aspects with equal felicity.
